Difference is an accident of birth and it should therefore never be the source of hatred or conflict. “Difference is of the essence of humanity. The concept of unity in diversity … underlies our various pursuits at the United Nations.”‘ And we have been brought together to work in a great common cause: the survival and progress of mankind. “We are men and women from many lands, representing a rich variety of cultures. “We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.” “Peace is not unity in similarity but unity in diversity, in the comparison and conciliation of differences.” There are not more than five cardinal tastes, yet combinations of them yield more flavours than can ever be tasted.” There are not more than five primary colours, yet in combination they produce more hues than can ever been seen. “There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. “Christian, Jew, Muslim, shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the mystery, unique and not to be judged” Unity in diversity seeks to move beyond mere tolerance of other ethnic, cultural and religious divisions but seeks to promote the idea that each distinct constituent part plays a valid contribution which strengthens the whole. It suggests that far from being weakened by different cultural strands, a nation/group is made stronger by acceptance of the many different contributions made by its constituent parts. Unity in diversity seeks to transcend the notion that an ideal nation should be composed of a certain ideology or ethnic group. How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive from Him the little things? If we do not give thanks daily for the Christian fellowship in which we have been placed, even where there is no great experience, no discoverable riches, but much weakness, small faith, and difficulty if on the contrary, we only keep complaining to God that everything is so paltry and petty, so far from what we expected, then we hinder God from letting our fellowship grow according to the measure and riches which are there for us all in Jesus Christ.Unity in diversity is a slogan which seeks to celebrate how a nation can be stronger be welcoming different cultural, social and ethnic elements. We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts. Then we deplore the fact that we lack the deep certainty, the strong faith, and the rich experience that God has given to others, and we consider this lament to be pious. We think we dare not be satisfied with the small measure of spiritual knowledge, experience, and love that has been given to us, and that we must constantly be looking forward eagerly for the highest good. We prevent God from giving us the great spiritual gifts He has in store for us, because we do not give thanks for daily gifts. Only he who gives thanks for little things receives the big things. “In the Christian community thankfulness is just what it is anywhere else in the Christian life. Honour to man, this masterpiece of nature, this king of the creation!” But man - man, who God created in his own image - man, upon whom God has laid his first, his sole commandment, to love his neighbour - man, to whom God has given a voice to express his thoughts - what is his first cry when he hears his fellowman is saved? A blasphemy. Lead two sheep to the butcher's, two oxen to the slaughterhouse, and make one of them understand that his companion will not die the sheep will bleat for pleasure, the ox will bellow with joy. Do you know what gave him strength? - do you know what consoled him? It was, that another partook of his punishment - that another partook of his anguish - that another was to die before him. Here is a man who had resigned himself to his fate, who was going to the scaffold to die - like a coward, it is true, but he was about to die without resistance. ![]() “Look, look,' cried the count, seizing the young man's hands - "look, for on my soul it is curious.
